Wall Finishes
One of the worst problems with wall-coverings and paints is their toxicity level
during production and application. Taking to consideration principles of
Green Design, you should use whenever possible paint, finishes,
and wall-coverings that meet the following criteria:
- Use natural ingredients
- Are made in water-based manufacturing processes, especially with regard to
printed wall coverings
- Use renewable resources
- Contain no toxic solvents or VOCs (volatile organic chemicals)
Using paints with low levels of VOCs and without toxic solvents can limit
color choices. First select a subtle background color and then add interest
to the room through other accent items, like decorative wall panels,
wall-hangings and tapestries. A lot of wall finishes and wall decor products
not only will enhance look of your home, by contribute largely to
home energy conservation
and indoor air quality.
Natural products and materials for wall also must be chosen with care. For
example, cork is a renewable resource and therefore works well
in green design. Wood selected from sustainable forest management groups such as
the Tropical Forest Foundation is also a wise choice. However, because wood
usually requires a stain and/or finish, non-solvent, low-toxicity finishes should
be preferred.

Selecting Wall Decor Materials

When selecting a finish for a wall, you need an understanding of the functional, aesthetic, and economic requirements of the
space. From a functional viewpoint, the amount of use or traffic in the area
is a critical factor. For example, corridors, walkways, or other and other
high-traffic areas of your home will require wall treatments that are more
durable and easy to maintain. Chair-rail
molding and durable baseboard made of environmentally safe High
Definition Polymer System (HDPS) have incredible strength and are shock resistant;
Outstanding qualities made these moldings appropriate for high traffic areas in commercial and residential
interiors.
Some rooms may require sound-absorbing wall coverings. Libraries, studies,
music rooms, and offices benefit from soft, absorbent wall coverings. Large rooms with hard surface flooring benefit from the use of cork walls or
fabric panels, which also can double as display areas. In historic buildings,
you may need to use materials that hide imperfections. Flat paint conceals flaws better than a semi-gloss.
Aesthetically, the architectural details of the room may direct the selection of
the wall finish. An adobe fireplace would allow for a more casual finish. A traditional
fireplace mantels may call for a more subdued wall
material or paint. A traditional setting also may require an elaborate pattern or trompe L'oeil print. A strong
contemporary structure may dictate the use of sleek metals and poured
concrete walls. Large expanses of glass or glass block also may be appropriate
You need to know whether the wall will serve as a focal point or as a
backdrop for other objects. A strong, brilliant wall covering may be
appropriate for a kitchen; however, if you plan on displaying an artwork the wall material should be
neutral so the focus is on the art.
When selecting patterned wallpaper, it is important to consider the scale of
the room and select a pattern compatible with it. A small pin dot or petite
floral may function well in a bathroom wall, but would be out of scale for a
dining room or foyer. A wall treatment with a vertical stripe will increase the
apparent height of a room, whereas a horizontal stripe will make the ceiling
feel lower. Diagonal stripes on a wall can create confusion and
disorientation and are not recommended unless vibrancy is the goal.
From an economic point of view, if you are on a limited budget, or if
time is a major consideration, a new coat of paint is probably the best
solution. Paint is the least expensive and easiest interior wall finish to
change. A new coat of paint will dramatically alter a room's presence.
Accentuated wood molding or doors also will create a new energizing effect.
Finally, if you concerned with environmental issues, you should use
environmentally friendly products.

Wall Decor and Wallpaper Options
When decorating a house, you may find yourself spending hours poring
over books of wallpaper samples. But before deciding on
a specific pattern, ask yourself whether you really want to wallpaper your walls.
Keep in mind that all wallpaper is an imitation of nature or art and
very repetitive, and though it can be very pretty and useful in creating
illusions, it may be more of a hindrance to your decorating scheme than
an enhancement. Walls should be reserved for art and books, and almost
always a solid, painted background is preferable to a printed wallpaper
that may draw the eye away from favorite things.
What do you do, however, when you have an accumulation of pretty
pictures but are a long way from having enough objects of scale to carry
the entire surface area? In a desire to dress naked walls, the natural
temptation is to employ wallpaper as a solution, though this decision
may be shortsighted.
The main reason a lot of designers prefer painted walls to wallpaper is that you can
instantly change the mood of a room by dipping a paint brush into a
delicious, fresh color. Wallpaper is static, inflexible. Walls should
allow for spontaneity and change, just as a garden is in a state of
constant transformation. Wallpapered rooms lack freshness, seeming
dated, stuck in the past, never evolving. And few people muster the
time, energy, and money to freshen up a papered room every five years.
Many people are tempted to wallpaper a nursery or a little girl's
bedroom, but it is wiser to put the money into art posters and paint
over cork board so a child can display some of his or her own art in the
room. Also, the ladybug-and-clover wallpaper in your ten-year-old
daughter's bedroom will probably not suit her when she reaches high school age.
It can be argued that wallpaper is less expensive in the long run
because it has a longer life span than paint. Wallpaper also hides
imperfections and cracks in the wall that paint does not. But a solution
to this problem, aside from wallpaper, is to put up a large wall
hanging—a quilt or tapestry or other large art—that will cover major imperfections.
If walls are in bad condition, it is usually far more sensible to repair
and paint the damaged areas than to use wallpaper as a cover-up.
However, when walls are in really bad condition, canvas-back papers may
be a less expensive solution to repairing the walls unless you do the
repair work yourself. Canvas-back papers are practical band-aids for
large cracks in old plaster walls, and provide a textured surface and color.

Walls in Your Home
In any interior environment, the ceilings and walls create a backdrop for
the inhabitants. These surfaces provide security, enclose the mechanical
systems, and create a comfortable living environment. Materials and finishes that are applied to these surfaces
are very important. Care should be taken to ensure that the products used for wall and
ceiling design are durable, meet the functional
needs of the space, and are environmentally safe. You must also utilize the principles and elements
of design when selecting wall finishes so that they coordinate with the
architectural components and enhance the human experience.
Walls should never be emotional barriers but opportunities to expand your soul, please your eye, and delight your spirit
View your wall as space to hang beautiful art, intricate
wall mirror or
wall niche to showcase your favorite artifact, sculpture
or flower arrangements while creating classic charm and sophistication.
Refined wall decor visually enhances room's sense of space.
By adding to your wall decor panel moldings and alluring decorative elements you can create a wall decor so
walls become more expansive, more useful, and less of an emotional barrier.
None of us inherits perfectly graceful walls, but it is up to us to make them beautiful.
